Reise zur Insel Wight zum Marconi Memorial

 2024 soll die Funkreise, ähnlich wie in den vergangenen Jahren nach Grimeton und nach Arkala / Nordkap, diesmal auf die Insel Wight gehen. Ziel ist das Marconi Memorial. Dieses ist nicht weiter spektakulär, es gibt einen Erinnerungsstein an die erste Funkverbindung von dort über den Atlantik nach Neufundland. Also die erste erfolgreiche Funkverbindung über den Atlantik.

 In spring 2024 I plan a trip similar to the trips the years before. We have been at Grimeton and Arkala / North Cap. This year the final target is the isle Wight. Here the Marconi memorial which celebrates the first radio contact bridging the Atlantic.

Während der Reise plane ich zumindest eine SOTA Aktivierung in jedem Land durch das wir durchreisen. Damit sammelt man neben der Freude an der Aktivierung auch wertvolle Punkte für die Mountain Hunter Awards

During the trip I plan at least one SOTA activation in every country which we pass. This allows to increase the number of activated associations significantly. The Mountain Hunter Awards will be increased at list by 5 or even 7 associations.

Der genaue Reiseweg wird sich erst kurzfristig ergeben. Die grün eingezeichnete Variante würde alle 2 PA SOTA Ziele einbeinden. Das wird eine Zeitfrage sein ob wir uns das antun wollen, wär' aber lustig ein ganzes Land komplett zu haben.
The final travel path is updated on demand. The green variant in the picture above includes both SOTA goals in PA. It's a question on available time. Would be some fun having all mountains of an country!
 
Die Reise startet am 8. Juni, Rückkehr am Sonntag 16. Juni. Das Wetter ist üblicherweise in der Zeit schon stabil - hoffen wir.
The journey starts on 8th of June and lasts till sunday 16th June. The weather is typicly stable in this season - let's hope so.
 
Erster Entwurf des Reiseverlaufs:
  • Samstag : von OE Richtung F mit Tagesziel Grenze DL/F um noch in DL zu übernachten spart Sprachschwierigkeiten, Gegend nach Stuttgart
  • Sonntag : F und LX am nächsten Tag weiter nach ON Richtung Ärmel Kanal.
  • Montag : Zug oder Fähre nach G Transferkosten sind nahezu ident, Zug ist halt viel schneller.
  • Dienstag : G Besichtigungen und Reise Richtung Portsmouth Gegend
  • Mittwoch : Insel Wight rauf und runter und Rückweg Richtung Europa (G gehört ja nimma dazu, haben die vor Jahren selbst beschlossen 😀)
  • Donnerstag : PA um dort einen Mugel zu benutzen – gibt ja nur 2 zur Auswahl
  • Freitag : Rückreise nach DL, gleich nach OE ginge auch aber ist pure Kilometer Fresserei
  • Samstag : Abschluss Rückreise nach OE – bei Passau gibt’s jede Menge SOTA Punkte Lieferanten
  • Sonntag : planerischer Reservetag
Early ideas about the trip:
  • Saturday : from OE to F close to the border but staying in DL, avoiding language issues
  • Sunday : F and LX next day to ON in direction to the channel.
  • Monday : Train or Ferry to G, pretty much same cost but train is faster.
  • Tuesday : G sight seeing and in direction to Bornmouth
  • Wednesday : Isle Wight on and off, back in direction to Europe, (G does not want to belong to Europe any more ad they have decided 😀)
  • Thursday : PA difficult only 2 summits available there
  • Friday : back to DL, possible to return to OE bit this is just driving
  • Saturday : returning back to Austria, there are cheap SOTA points near to Passau
  • Sunday : planned spare day

Das Logo weist symbolhaft auf das Ziel, SOTA und Funkaktivität hin. Selbstverständlich wird sowohl in Phonie FM, DMR, D*, SSB als auch CW Betrieb gemacht werden. Einfach die Spots im Cluster als auch die Ankündigungen in der Telegram Gruppe nachlesen.

Reisedetails

 Mit fortschreitender Planung ergeben sich natürlich Änderungen vom ursprünglichen Weg. So werden wir am Samstag weiter südlich fahren und der Erdfunkstelle Raisting besichtigen. Damit fällt Nürnberg als Zwischenziel weg.
Ich habe bei AVIS das Auto gebucht. Dieser Vermieter erlaubt das Auto nach UK zu fahren. Fordert aber daß man durch den Euotunnel reist. Damit sind die Fährverbindungen im Ärmlkanal nicht nutzbar.
Die LEZ "Low Emission Zone" im Großraum London betrifft offensichtlich nur alte Diesel Autos. Den LEZ WEB Seiten zu Folge sind da Fahrzeuge bis Euro-6 gelistet. Neuere Fahrzeuge sind nicht betroffen. Hoff' das ist auch wirklich so. Euro-6 also nach 2016 sollten frei sein ... Wie WEB Seiten sind völlig unklar für mich.

Some Travel Details

 While I'm planning in more detail some changes compared to the initial route are necessary. On Saturday we will visit the ground station at Raisting. So Nurnberg is not possible any more. We will travel much more south.
I booked the car at AVIS. This rental car company allows to travel to UK. They demand to use the euro tunnel. This means we will not have the option to use a ferry in one or the other direction.
The LEZ "Low Emission Zone" in the greater area of london adresses in my opinion only older diesel cars. On the UK pages they list cars from Euro-6 upwards are of so after 2016. The WEB is totaly unclear about this.
 

Wetter

 Die Funk und terrestrische Wetter Situation ist im Vorfeld etwas Besorgnis erregend. So war am Anfang Mai durch die X-Flares kaum Kurzwellen Betrieb möglich. Die Tage danach entwickelte sich im Norden Frankreichs und im Saarland eine Hochwassertatastrope. Es kann gut möglich sein, daß wir kurzfristig umplanen müssen.

Weather

 The weather situation is quite difficult, this is for terrestrial as well as radio weather. In early May there where several x-flares which stopped HF radio for several hours. a week later the was severe flooding in northern part of France and in Saarland. I expect that we need to adopt if issue come up.

Reisepfad

 Der etwas detailiertere Reisepfad zeigt die geplante Route Status etwa eine Woche vor der Abreise. Im vergleich zum ersten plan weicht die Route ab. Es ist Reservezeit eingeplant, Berge können ausgelassen getauscht oder sogar andere hinzu kommen.

Eine Unsicherheit bringt das Wetter. Eine Woche vor Abreise waren in Deutschland Überschwemmungen, noch etwas früher ebenso welche in Nordfrankreich und dem Saarland.

Travel Path

 The moire detailed travel path shows the status about a week before we leave. It got a lot of updated and has some spare time included. I expect not evey SOTA point of the plan will be visited. Evenually we will change our munds and use a point which we have'nt planned yet.

There is an uncertance about the weather. A week before we leave there was flooding in Germany, a bit earlyer also on north France and in Saarland.
